2024 top baby Name Trends
Olivia and Liam both remained in the #1 spot for girls and boys respectively for the sixth straight year! Another notable change was the increase in popularity of certain names, particularly the name Truce for boys. Truce increased its rank by over 11,000 spots jumping from the 12,109th most popular name in 2023 to 991st in 2024. The name with the biggest increase in popularity for girls was Ailany, going from 855th in 2023 to just outside of the top 100 at 101st in 2024.
In a press release on the data, newly confirmed SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano stated, “Growing up with a working mom, I witnessed firsthand the dedication, resilience, and balance it takes to juggle both career and family. Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers in our lives who inspire us and set an example for future generations.” Full press release here.
Social security administration – top baby names data
This data comes from the applications for Social Security numbers, or SSNs, submitted during the 2024 year. Most parents apply for their child’s social security number at birth during their hospital stay. Parents have to provide the child’s name in the application. An SSN is needed to do things like open a bank account in the child’s name, claim the child as a dependent on taxes, and buy savings bonds. It also ensures your child’s identity is officially recognized in the system. See how to apply for an SSN for a child here.
SSA began collecting name data for births in the United States after 1879. However, many people born before 1937 never applied for a Social security card, so their names are not included in the data, and names that are may not have provided location of birth information. SSA began publishing the popular names lists and database in 1998.
