SSA Cost-of-Living Adjustment for 2027 is 3.6% Increase

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027, increasing monthly benefits for millions of Americans, including individuals receiving Social Security disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The annual adjustment is designed to help beneficiaries keep up with inflation and the rising cost of everyday necessities, such as groceries, housing, utilities, and medical care.

When will the 2027 COLA take Effect?

The 3.6% increase will take effect for Social Security benefits beginning in January 2027. SSI recipients will begin seeing the increase in their payments on December 31, 2026.

The amount of the increase to each individual’s benefits payment will depend on your current benefit amount. For example, a person currently receiving $1,500 per month would receive an additional $54 per month if the full 3.6% adjustment applies to their benefit. It is important to remember that a COLA increase does not necessarily mean every beneficiary will see the same dollar amount added to their monthly payment.

What Does This Mean for Disability Benefits?

For people receiving SSDI, the COLA generally increases monthly payments automatically. The SSA estimates that the average monthly benefit for disabled workers will rise from $1,642 to approximately $1,701 in January 2027.

SSI recipients will also receive an increase, although individual payment amounts can vary based on income, living arrangements, and other eligibility factors.
